SPOILER ALERT!
Normally, I try to keep the spoilers out of my reviews to let you enjoy the whole story, start to finish, for yourself. But this book...oh, this book...you'll see.

Big Girl Panties was a fun one! Holly was incredibly relatable and I'd be surprised if there was a woman out there who couldn't find something of herself in this fun-loving, inspiring, but still real character. On the flip side, I really didn't like Logan much at all. He kind of came across as that D-bag you eventually realize you're better off without. You know, after a weekend of crying into a tub or two of Ben & Jerry's. There are a couple points in this book where Holly is flirting with other men and I desperately wanted one of them - ANY one of them - to take Logan's place. Now, I admit I'm one of those readers who almost always likes the secondary male character better than the hero, but I've never actually fantasized about burning the hero's eyelashes off with a blow torch. Not until now, anyway.
If you take Logan out of the book, I actually liked it quite a bit, but his personality was just so....ARGH! I'm not sure if this was intentional (in which case, WHY?!) or something the author didn't notice, but he really came across as shallow and douchey and horrible and Holly could do so much better. In any case, it's worth the read if you have the time. I give it 3.5 cupcakes out of 5.

I try to soften my expression and unclench my fists as I stand before Marcus. The deep-seated hatred I feel for this man is indescribable, but I keep my cool. I don't have a choice.

Marcus's eyes feel heavy as they drag down my body and then back up, bouncing as they catch my eyes. His demeanor is harsher than I remember of the pleading boy I first encountered at the club. Despite his transformation, I feel like the man could show a little, I don't know, remorse? Decency? There is no shame in his salacious expression. I'm tempted to comment on his audacity.

Bravo, sir. You have made me feel incredibly uncomfortable in under thirty seconds.

Although, this might be my angle. I take another drag from my cigarette, smiling but eyeing him suspiciously. He lets the silence hang, and my patience wanes.

Fine, have it your way, Marcus. "I hope you don't mind my intrusion." I pout.

He shrugs, and I worry that he either knows my secrets, or is hiding his own.

I'll take option two, please.

"Glad to have some company, actually. What's your excuse?"

I raise an eyebrow, and I let my lip twitch, pondering his question. He doesn't seem too attached to his date. Thinking about that horrid woman, my eyes dart to the glowing windows. I spot Jeremy's towering, broad frame on the dance floor. My heart skips a beat. He is already dancing with her. He's smiling; she's smiling.

It's all going according to plan, isn't it? I feel my stomach plummet with jealousy. I take a deep breath, feeling the crisp night air burning an icy path where the cigarette smoke once was, trying to regain my focus.

"So, I see even you aren't immune to the Jeremy Hunt effect." Marcus interrupts my reverie. He takes a long drag, not taking his eyes off me.

Marcus is either entirely driven by his drug habit, or he has managed to accrue a substantial amount of confidence between now and our front door encounter almost a week ago. It’s in his eyes. Before he couldn’t even hold my gaze, but now his eyes are determined, teetering on piercing. I want to be impressed, but instead, I see it as another opportunity to work to my advantage.

I peruse the veranda, checking for any familiar faces. There is only one other couple out here canoodling, which means few observers. As my eyes swing back around, Derek makes his entrance onto the balcony through the double doors. Perfect timing, as usual.

Derek's lips don't move, and he doesn't make eye contact, but my earpiece buzzes with his disapproving tone. "Are you really smoking right now?"

The corner of my mouth twitches with a lingering smile. I take a defiant stance and take a long drag, bringing my eyes back to Marcus.

                                    Pretty Package With a Bad-Ass Bow

I had one goal in mind when writing my first novel:

I wanted a strong, kick-ass female character. Period.  (No transitioning hormonal female pun intended).

While making it a point to read a lot of books last year, I realized I had pretty much only read Romance —this was an accident, but I found myself such a sucker for the genre. Who doesn’t love: girl-meets-boy, girl-falls-in-love with boy? *Fans-self* “Oh-Oh! ME!”

However, there was something frustrating about half of the books I read.

Their leading lady was flimsy, and at the whim of her leading man. The build of her confidence would be slow, and overwhelmingly frustrating to me, and all I thought was:

When does the girl get to take the wheel on this weird road of love?

Well, the truth of the matter is, men never let woman drive.

I needed to change that.

Finding that my first novel fit nicely into the genre of “Romantic Suspense” I found a home for my gun-wielding, witty main character, Special Agent Alex Turner, who’s lack of patience was a perfect characteristic for a woman who made her own destiny rather then simply let things happen.

I think Agent Turner, gives the female lead, and the avid romance reader, hope.

A main character perfectly flawed, but driven to do better, especially when it comes to matters of the heart. Not to mention I wanted my main character to have the emotional range of a teenage boy, because let’s face it, not all girls know what the hell to do with their emotions.

Okay, I must confess something though, because my main character is not only emotionally underdeveloped, but a federal agent; trained to kill on a whim, her morality hits a grey area constantly when it comes to the value of a human life, and on top of everything else she openly prefers her gun to a boyfriend.

So, is she an impressively strong female lead, or an emotional nightmare? I like the dichotomy.

This is why I fell in love with the idea of this novel.

You’re suddenly being lead by Agent Turner, and you want her to succeed in a myriad of different ways. In Emotionally Compromised, she struggles to do her job, somehow manages a potential love interest, while at the same time keeping her sense of self, and doing the right thing —whether that means pulling the trigger, or taking down her emotional wall to do something as simple as telling her boyfriend how she feels. She’d argue pulling the trigger might be easier.

With Emotionally Compromised I wanted a pretty package with a bad-ass bow to place on top of it. I wanted a fluid combination of personal growth, wonderfully complicated emotional range, and heartfelt struggles of a powerful woman that could kick the butt of the average female lead.

I think I might have done it, and I hope the readers think so too.

Review
This romance strikes a perfect balance between the kinds hot scenes we all love and quality characters. Agent Turner, for example, is strong, but has her...let's say quirks, making her believably real, because, let's face it, who among us isn't quirky? It's easy to become emotionally invested with characters like these.
It was also easy to become invested in the plot. The romance was hot (and okay, it kind of made me wish there was a someone special in my life) and the suspense was can't-go-to-bed-I-have-to-know-what-happens-next addictive. I'll definitely be looking for more of A. Rosa's books in the future!

Review 
I haven't had a chance to read the first two books in this series, so there were some "what's going on moments" for me, but they didn't take much away from the book. I recommend reading the first two before this one, but I can still say it was a well-written, exciting read. I loved the multiple plotlines and variety of characters (sort of reminiscent of Game of Thrones). I can't wait to read the first two then continue the series when book four comes out! I give Eternal Blades four cupcakes out of five. 

Naming Characters

I’m often asked where I got my character’s names for my novels/series. Picking names for characters can be as easy as drawing a name out of a hat or it may require some long detailed research or it may come to an author as she or he is writing out the story.

Names for heroes and heroines also go through trends. After the Twilight Saga was released, one saw an amazing increase (or use) of heroines named Bella. I’m given a lot of books to read and review and I must admit I got to the point that if the heroine was named Bella, I wanted to immediately put the book down.

Sadly, once a hero or heroine’s name has become as well known as a character like Bella from Twilight, a reader will begin to identify with the original and not the character the author is portraying in their new work, no matter how hard the author depicts the new character with the same name.

One can also see an abundance of Edward’s, Ian’s, and Wrath’s (in its many forms) in paranormal romances. Just like mother’s naming babies, authors tend to name their characters by what is popular. Names for children that were popular 50 or 100 years ago are no longer used. Edith, Elsie, Bert, Howard have been replaced by Ashley, Shawn, Kristy, and Ian.

It’s not uncommon for an author to change the character’s name after the project is finished for one reason or another. Sometimes this is brought about by an agent or publisher who just doesn’t like the name, or the author discovers a name he or she merely likes better. Unlike several of my author friends, my character’s names have never changed, with the exception of one secondary character who a beta-reader suggested I chance since the description of the character was too close to someone in real life she knew. The primary reason I didn’t change my main character’s names is because, they (my characters) introduced themselves to me in a dream and although my seven heroes can at times sound like a bunch of Ninja turtles, their names have and will remain the same. There is also a little back story which tells how they got their modern names within the series which ties into some well known historical facts, which does give there presence and their names some credibility.

Their original Egyptian names can get confusing for the reader since they are often long and a couple of them are very similar in text and sound, so I have tried to refrain from using them, except when it is necessary to the story. I am currently working on two of the hist oricals for the series which take place in ancient times. My ancient Egyptian dictionary’s along with an abundance reference books sit on the floor beside me to help me when I use unusual names, places, etc.

Coming up with unusual names can be fun and rewarding. The heroine from, Eternal Blades, the third book in my series name is Tshering Snow. Tshering is an usual name and one that took many research hours on my part. Since she comes from a small country in the Himalayas’ I wanted her name to mean something special, sound original and still have the readers be able to relate to her. Even her last name, Snow, is an original Bhutanese surname.

When one is writing historicals, the author needs to first research the various time frames he or she is writing in. As we have already discovered, common names for various parts of the world have changed over time. That also includes the spelling variations for simple names such as Sue depending on time and location. Susan, Suzanne, Susannah, Suzan, Susie, Suzie, Suzy, and Sousan are all variations of the name Sue.

Coming up with a set of unusual, never before used names, can be very rewarding to the author and leave a great impact on the author’s readers. One such series stays foremost on my mind, J.R. Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood. Her hero’s names share their flaws and strengths and are named accordingly; Wraith, Tohrment, Vishous, Rhage, and Vishous are just some of the names she uses in her series. Even her spelling variations are to be complemented on.

Review
Susy Asylum is the second in a series that began with Provex City. In the first book, Michael Pierce does a fantastic job giving Oliver a voice that really draws the reader into his life so I was excited to get more from him. Just like the first book, Susy Asylum  leaves you with a ton of questions that you just can't wait to have answered, so I'll definitely be picking up book three (well played, Mr. Pierce, well played).

The world building in this series is fantastic - every detail is thoughtful and well-described and you can't help but being drawn into Provex City and feeling like you're right there with Oliver and Desiree as the grow as characters throughout their journey. And what a journey! Susy Asylum picks up just a few weeks after Provex City ends, but it takes a darker turn than the first book and parts of it do leave you feeling raw (in a good way).

I give this one 4 cupcakes out of 5!

How you created your vampire characters to stand out from others of the same genre.

Wonderful question and thank you so much for allowing me to hang out with you and talk about Everlasting Hunger!  If it is one thing that I have been told about my vampires, it is that they are different.  For the longest time, vampires have been portrayed as solidary characters and they could be evil masterminds or awesome loners.  With the recent trend of vamps, I noticed that they all seem to be craving a soul mate that was completely theirs.  They can’t live without that one person that completes them.

Personally, that drives me nuts.  Vampires all start out as humans (for the most part, depends on where your legend comes from) and we are social creatures.  It just seems odd to think that they will only want one person for the rest of their immortal lives.  I wanted my characters to step outside of the “normal” way vampires interact. 

That being said, my vamps are a little risqué.  They bond but they are open in their sexuality and their partners.  Their bonding is on a fundamental level that excludes the emotion of jealousy.  Sounds strange I know but I like being a little different.  They don’t care about social drinking from someone else or even sex.  Love knows no boundaries with them and I love how they can love multiple people.  The bond between the couple is something so deep that goes beyond just a sexual encounter.  It is a connection that is so unique and powerful that it can never be severed.

Review

If you're looking for sparkly, girly vampires, you're not going to find them here. Everlasting Hunger is a real vampire novel and it is hot! If you're a fan of the Anita Blake books, you will love this and even if you're not, you should give it a try. Brandy is a wonderful author and I was drawn into the story from the very first sentence. The characters grabbed me and made me absolutely love (or absolutely love to hate) them. I recommend picking this one as a sort of nontraditional, sexy Halloween read. You won't be sorry.

Sanctuary follows the story of 19 year old Jennie after aliens arrive on Earth. Pauline does a wonderful job writing her characters, giving each of them flaws and strengths that are demonstrated through their actions - actions, I might add, that always advance the plot in thoughtful ways. Even the aliens are well-written; terrifying, evocatively described, and my brand-new recurring nightmare :) 
The only negative thing I have to say was that Sanctuary was a bit heavy on the Christian faith theme and seemed a bit preachy to me at times. That of course, is a personal preference of mine and those who share religious faith or enjoy reading religious themes will probably enjoy that aspect of the book.

Pauline Creeden is a horse trainer from Virginia, but writing is her therapy. In her fiction, she creates worlds that are both familiar and strange, often pulling the veil between dimensions. She becomes the main character in each of her stories, and because she has ADD, she will get bored if she pretends to be one person for too long.

I loved the plot and the personalities of the characters. The story really wasn't what I expected and I loved discovering it bit by bit (as you may have noticed, I hate predictable books). Paranormal and fantasy create such wonderful new worlds while still leaving so much room for the reader's imagination, and Finding Esta didn't disappoint on that front. I did think that the writing style left a bit to be desired though, so this one can only get 3 cupcakes out of 5. Do pick it up if you want an interesting, out-of-the-box read that lets your imagination run wild.
